Over 135,000 Demand the CA Water Resources Control Board to Shut Down Nestlé’s Water Bottling Operations in California Immediately

CALIFORNIA — With California in its fourth year of one of the worst droughts in modern history, and Governor Jerry Brown instituting sweeping restrictions on urban water use — more than 135,000 people in California and around the country are demanding that the California Water Resources Control Board immediately move to shut down Nestlé’s water bottling operations in the State.

The petition, launched by the California-based Courage Campaign, comes as a recent NASA report shows that California only has enough surface water to last the State for another year, all while Nestlé continues to bottle water straight from the heart of California’s drought and export it out of State for profit.

Nestle extracts water from California specifically for its Arrowhead and Pure Life brands, and bottles its product from at least a dozen natural springs. One such bottling plant is located on a Native American reservation in one of California’s most drought-stricken areas that is exempt from oversight by local water agencies.

“With people across California doing their part to conserve water — it’s time that Nestlé did the right thing and put people over profits by immediately halting their water bottling operations in Cabazon, CA and across the state,” explained Eddie Kurtz, executive director of the California-based Courage Campaign. “And if Nestlé won’t do what’s right to protect California’s precious water supply, it is up to the State Water Resource Control Board to step in and stop this blatant misuse of water during this epic drought.”

To make matters worse, Nestlé has repeatedly ignored requests from local residents to halt its operations, even as water levels in local wells continue to shrink and residents experience poor water service and sputtering faucets. Activists have even gone so far as to block all truck entrances of Nestlé’s South Sacramento plant carrying torches and pitchforks.
