It is essential for Senators to pass bills to stop voter suppression and defend Democracy
Los Angeles — In response to the anticipated senate vote on the Freedom to Vote Act and the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act, and President Biden’s recent call to pass these critical bills, California’s largest progressive organization, Courage California, released the following statement:
Irene Kao, Executive Director of Courage California, issued the following statement:
“Passing the Freedom to Vote Act and the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act is the most important thing our Senators can do to reject attempts to silence voters, defend every person’s freedom to vote, and protect the health and integrity of our elections,” said Irene Kao, Executive Director of Courage California. “We must demand that our senators make bold steps and pass these two critical bills to ensure every vote counts in 2022 and future elections.”
“Together, the bills will create national standards to ensure that we can safely and freely cast our ballots, guarantee that trusted local election officials count every vote, and prevent partisan politicians from sabotaging the results of our elections,” said Kao. “Because in America, voters decide the outcome of our elections!”
Voters turned out in historic numbers to choose their leaders in 2020, and polls show broad public support for protecting voter rights.
It is up to our elected leaders to serve the will of the people by protecting our freedom to vote. Instead, last year, 19 states passed 34 laws that made it more difficult for people to vote, and 88 more are being considered this month. Now, the Senate has the opportunity to correct these attacks on our voting rights and protect our elections, and we need our senators on board.
