After the violence of the past four years culminating in the January 6 Insurrection, we’ve come to see just how vulnerable our current state of democracy is.
That’s why Congress re-introduced H.R.1 — the For the People Act — which would be the first step in removing corporate and foreign influence from our elections and make our elections more free, fair, and transparent. With the House preparing to vote on the bill, we need to do everything we can to put pressure on Congress to pass this critical bill.
The For The People Act aims to accomplish three overarching goals:
- protect and strengthen the sacred right to vote,
- end the dominance of big money in politics,
- and implement anti-corruption, pro-ethics measures to clean up government.
Last year, the bill passed through the House before being stalled in the Senate. This year, due to a Democratically-controlled Senate, we have a real chance of passing this bill and making reform a reality.
“The For the People Act could be the last best chance to fix our broken democracy.”
– Common Cause
While most representatives understand the urgency of democracy reform, the bill faces a significant hurdle with the filibuster rule in place. The filibuster necessitates support from key Republicans — particularly those few who broke ranks with Trump — to pass the monumental bill, and we don’t expect the support to come easily.
That’s why we need Californians to write their local newspapers to let our community and our elected representatives know that we believe in and want a democracy that serves ALL Americans.
Please write to your local paper and help rally support for the For the People’s Act, in just a couple easy steps with our letter-to-the-editor tool, and demand that Congress pass H.R.1.
