Courage California Endorses Progressive and Equity-Focused Incumbents and Candidates In Key Races.
Los Angeles — Eight months ahead of the June 7, 2022 primary elections, Courage California is endorsing five statewide and two local candidates:
- Secretary of State Dr. Shirley Weber
- Attorney General Rob Bonta
- Board of Equalization member Malia Cohen for State Controller
- Alana Mathews for Sacramento District Attorney
- Sajid Khan for Santa Clara District Attorney

Courage California works with local and statewide partners to identify priority races, screens candidates based on their top issues, approach to passing progressive policies and tackling barriers, and record of governance and leadership.
Secretary of State Dr. Shirley Weber
Our freedom to vote is under attack as conservative special interests try to make it harder for people to vote, even here in California. Secretary of State Shirley Weber draws on a rich family history of fighting for voting rights and access and a track record as an effective legislator for her communities, and her passion for her work will translate directly into more Californians exercising their power of the ballot and embracing their role in state civics.
Board of Equalization member Malia Cohen for State Controller
Malia Cohen brings a strong equity-focused approach to wielding the power of the state budget. She has a deep understanding of how other issues — like criminal justice reform, housing, and environmental justice — connect to economic justice, and her experience as a San Francisco Supervisor and Board of Equalization member will serve her well in navigating such a significant and complex role.

Criminal Justice Reform slate
Corporations must act more responsibly with our state’s resources, such as the communities they reside in and the workforce they employ. Unfortunately, many corporations, instead, target and take advantage of lower-income and communities of color. By exploiting cheap labor and harming the air, water, and land in our neighborhoods, such corporations directly contribute to systems of poverty and crime. The most impacted communities have long been demanding reforms to our economic and criminal justice systems and leading on redefining justice to be more restorative and healing. Courage California’s Criminal Justice Reform slate will help ensure that progress is made for the long-term health and safety of California’s communities and residents.
In his first six months as Attorney General, Rob Bonta has built on his record as a Courage All-Star by actively working with community groups and leaders to move critical policies that reflect our experiences and priorities. In their campaigns to be District Attorneys in Sacramento and Santa Clara Counties, respectively, Alana Mathews and Sajid Khan offer clear and grounded approaches that will serve our diverse communities well. Re-electing AG Bonta and electing Mathews and Khan will grow our criminal justice reform movement and keep California and the nation on the right track to positively impact peoples’ lives with greater compassion and more accountability.
