The debate on Proposition 36
Proposition 47 was passed in 2014.
The Legislative Analyst’s Office said the proposition also lengthens some felony sentences and requires sentences for felonies to be served in a state prison instead of a county jail.
According to the analyst’s office, the proposition would increase costs due to increased workloads in courts and an increase in the state prison population.
… a coalition of 14 organizations has opposed Proposition 36, according to Courage California.
Courage California Executive Director Irene Kao said the proposition would result in more than $26 billion in prison costs.
“Voters must reject this deceptive attempt to roll back Prop. 47, which reduced our overcrowded prison population, invested in programs that successfully reduced recidivism and supported community health, and saved taxpayers billions,” Kao said.
