Courage Campaign Calls Out Corporate Interests for Misguided Opposition to $15 Minimum Wage

Yesterday, Governor Jerry Brown and labor leaders announced plans to pass legislation raising California’s statewide minimum wage to $15 dollars per hour by 2022.  The legislation sets the minimum wage to rise annually with the cost of living in the State and an estimated 5.6 million Californians will benefit from this wage increase.

Eddie Kurtz, executive director of the California-based Courage Campaign issued the following statement reacting to the news:

“With more than 40% of Californian workers earning less than $15 dollars an hour — including early educators, caregivers for seniors and people with disabilities, and even some college professors — raising the minimum wage to at least $15 an hour is long overdue.

It is saddening that industry advocates like The National Federation of Independent Business, California Business Roundtable, and California Retailers Association have already come out against this tremendous boost to working California families. Their opposition that flies in the face of the facts: where workers have access to higher minimum wages, those places have stronger economic growth and more dynamic local economies due to greater demand for goods and services.

Our elected officials must move swiftly to pass this legislation and stand firm against pressure from big monied interests who would seek to undermine this tremendous progress.  The more than 1.2 million members of Courage Campaign will be watching closely to make sure that they do.”
