Courage Campaign Demands Joe Bray-Ali Withdraw from LA City Council Race After Reports Reveal Pattern of Racist, Transphobic, Fat-Shaming, Comments in Online Posts

LOS ANGELES — Yesterday, the LAist reported that City Council candidate Joe Bray-Ali authored several hateful and vitriolic posts in online comment boards – commenting on racist    online forums, mocking overweight individuals and making transphobic comments.  Bray-Ali, who had previously been endorsed by The Los Angeles Times, confirmed that the comments were his and apologized for their content.

Eddie Kurtz, executive director of the California-based Courage Campaign, a leading California progressive organization, called on Bray-Ali to withdraw from the race, saying that there is no place for these kinds of comments in Los Angeles’ city council.  Kurtz issued the following statement:

“Bray-Ali has shown a years-long pattern of denigrating black people, trans folks, the intellectually disabled, and women. This would be inexcusable behavior for a high school student — much less a candidate for city council in one of the nation’s most diverse cities.  Bray-Ali should immediately withdraw from Los Angeles’ City Council race.”
