Courage Campaign on the New CA Democratic Supermajority
Leading Progressive Group Says CA Democrats Must Take This Opportunity to Provide Dramatically Different Vision of America Than Trump & Prove that Progressive Governance Benefits Californians in Tangible Ways
CALIFORNIA — Last night, the Associated Press announced that Democrat Josh Newman defeated Assemblywoman Ling Ling Chang (R-Diamond Bar) in the race for California’s 29th Senate District, giving Democrats a two-thirds supermajority in both houses of the State legislature.
In reaction to the news, Eddie Kurtz, executive director of the California-based Courage Campaign issued the following statement:
“The Democratic supermajority in the state legislature is a good thing, not only for California, but for the nation as a whole.
“California Democrats now have an enormous opportunity to use all the tools at their disposal to enact a dramatically different vision for our state and the nation than the incoming Republican President and his colleagues in Congress. This vision must be bold and inclusive. Our state must demonstrate that progressive, people-powered governance is not only possible but essential to forge broad-based prosperity, equality and justice.
“Democrats must prove that voters were right to trust them with this new power by delivering major results for the people of California and improving their lives in visible, tangible ways. Doing this will require a rejection of wealthy corporate interests that prioritize short-term profits over the well-being of millions of Californians.”
“Courage Campaign’s more than 1.3 million members look forward to working with Democrats in the State Assembly and Senate to build an even more progressive California — one that works for all of our citizens.”
