Courage Campaign on the Zimmerman Trial and the Need to Pass the LIFE Act in California
Statement by Rick Jacobs, founder and chair of CourageCampaign.org, on the Trayvon Martin murder case, “Stand Your Ground” Laws and the need to pass the Lifesaving Intelligent Firearms Enforcement (LIFE) Act in California:
“The Trayvon Martin murder case shows that our judicial system, and our society, have a long way to go before all can get equal justice. The case also demonstrated the deadly effect of the systematic dismantling of federal and state gun laws by the National Rifle Association (NRA) and its partner in crime, the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC). Laws like ‘Stand Your Ground’, long advanced by these corporate entities so that the NRA’s financial backers can sell more guns and bullets, created the vigilantism that killed an unarmed teen on his way home from buying candy. While we cannot undo what happened, we can and must fight for sensible gun violence prevention bills that will reduce the prospect for repeating these outrages. That’s why Courage members are fighting to pass the Lifesaving Intelligent Firearms Enforcement Act (LIFE) Act in California, a series of 8 bills that passed the senate and now await the Assembly Speaker’s leadership. By restricting guns and ammunition, these laws will reduce gun violence in California and can serve as a model for the nation. We can and we must end gun violence in this nation. Let’s make that Trayvon’s legacy.”
