Courage Campaign Reacts to Gov. Brown’s Inaugural Address

Statement from Eddie Kurtz, executive director of the California-based Courage Campaign, on Governor Jerry Brown’s 2015 Inaugural Address:

“Today as Governor Brown celebrated his reelection and Fourth inauguration, the Governor failed to articulate a concrete vision for the more than 8.9 million Californians struggling to make ends meet across the State.

In touting the State’s economic record under his tenure, Governor Brown once again failed to address the more than 23 percent of Californians currently living in poverty.  Economic storms threaten their families in a way that no rainy-day fund can prevent.  Simply put, California has the worst poverty rate in the country – and Governor Brown’s economic accomplishments have almost exclusively benefited the wealthiest among us.

Despite a series of sensible proposals and solid rhetoric to combat climate change, address rising education costs and provide much-needed infrastructure investment, Brown proposed little that would improve the economic outlook of the majority of Californians. The 900,000 members of Courage Campaign look forward to helping Gov. Brown understand the plight of working Californians and propose solutions that will allow them to enjoy the “California Comeback” as well.”
