Statement by Dr. Paul Song, executive chairman of the California-based CourageCampaign.org, on the latest court order on the prison deal:

“Last night’s court ruling gives the Governor and lawmakers in Sacramento another chance to move California towards a smarter, more humane and cost-effective justice system. At a time when our infamous prison system is making headlines around the country for all the wrong reasons, the court pushed the Governor to stand by his own previous proposals to lower the prison population by releasing inmates that have earned early release or pose no threat to society due to age and infirmity.”

“We hope the Governor will listen to the court, and the people of California, and work with Senator Steinberg to advance a sensible plan that does not squander our limited resources. The Courage Campaign, and our members, will continue to fight for a saner, more fiscally responsible approach to both sentencing and incarceration to create a justice system worthy of our great state. We can and must do better.”
