Courage Campaign Renews Call for Rep. Devin Nunes to Resign as Chairman of the House Intelligence Committee
Earlier this morning, House Intelligence Committee Chairman Devin Nunes (R-CA) said he would recuse himself from an investigation into Russian meddling in the 2016 election, including interactions between Moscow and the Trump campaign.
In response to Nunes’ recusal, Eddie Kurtz, Executive Director of the California-based Courage Campaign, issued the following statement:
“Congressman Nunes’ decision to remove himself from the ongoing criminal investigation into alleged Russian interference during the presidential race is an important first step in ensuring a fair and credible investigation. But amid the near nonstop news cycle around the Trump/Russia scandal, Nunes’ recusal does not go far enough; our country absolutely cannot afford to have a political hack serving as the Chairman of the House Intelligence Committee.
“That’s why more than 91,000 members of the Courage Campaign continue to call on Rep. Nunes to resign as Chairman of the House Intelligence Committee. After spending months lying to the public in defense of President Trump and delaying investigations, Nunes simply cannot be trusted with the important task of protecting the American people. If we are to truly get to the bottom of Russia’s interference in our election, Congress must create a special, independent commission to lead an investigation.”
Nunes recusal comes after months of public pressure from the California-based Courage Campaign which called on Nunes to resign as the Chairman of the House Intelligence Committee over his clear conflict of interest. More than 91,000 people have signed onto Courage Campaign’s petition, calling on Nunes to resign as the House Intelligence Committee chairman.
