As GOP Pumps Money Into California to Shut Out Dems, Progressives Fight Back
LOS ANGELES — As Republicans pump money into California’s 39th, 48th and 49th Districts in an effort to block Democrats from the ballot in November, Orange County-based Women for American Values and Ethics (WAVE) has teamed up with the California-based Courage Campaign for a massive five-figure effort to drive more than 400,000 women, people of color and infrequent Democratic voters to the polls ahead of Tuesday’s primary.
The targeted video ads running on Facebook tell the story of Yolanda Wight, a citizen of California’s 48th district, and her California story, highlighting the important role that California plays in the 2018 election.

“Because of California’s unique “jungle primary” in which the top 2 candidates advance to the general ballot, it is critical that we get as many people to vote as possible on June 5th to avoid losing the chance of winning back a Democratic majority in the House,” said WAVE founder and president Joanna Weiss. “We are proud to partner with Courage Campaign to increase voter turnout in the four Orange County congressional districts that political analysts have called ‘Ground Zero’ for taking back the House.”
“California is a true blue state, but unless we can turn out voters in Tuesday’s primary and get a Democrat on the ballot in every CA House district this Fall, we’ll be sending more Trump Republicans to Washington,” explained Eddie Kurtz, executive director of the California-based Courage Campaign. “These Republicans don’t represent California values. This year, California counts more than ever. California counts in winning back Congress, California counts in taking back our country, California counts for putting a check on the runaway Trump Administration. It’s time for a change.”

Courage Campaign’s #CaliforniaCounts initiative will work with local grassroots heroes to tell their stories and lift up their voices, particularly infrequent voters of color. It will include phone banking, peer-to-peer text messaging, and the new voter engagement tool ‘VoterCircle’ to harness the power of the more than 1.4 million Courage Campaign members. Courage Campaign will use those tools to target infrequent and lapsed Democratic voters in seven districts, including newly registered Democrats.
