Courage CA Supports Newly Elected Los Angeles District Attorney: George Gascón

LA DA George Gascon

Gascón won the D.A. race in 2020 against Jackie Lacey after campaigning on progressive criminal justice reforms

Los Angeles — A lawsuit filed by the Association of Deputy District Attorneys of Los Angeles County against newly elected Los Angeles County District Attorney, George Gascón, will be heard on Today, Tuesday, February 2, by the Superior Court of California in Los Angeles.

In response, Courage California, which endorsed Gascón in his 2020 race for District Attorney, has released the following statement:

“The voters of Los Angeles set a clear mandate for the County by electing District Attorney Gascón and passing Measure J, rejecting harmful law-and-order systems in favor of community-led reforms. Newly elected DA George Gascón is following through on his promise to achieve safety and equal justice for all Angelenos through justice reforms that are supported by data and research,” said Irene Kao, Executive Director of Courage California.

“Unfortunately, we’re not shocked that his own deputy district attorneys and law enforcement special interests are working so hard to undermine the authority of the elected prosecutor and the will of the voters. Not only did they invest millions into DA Jackey Lacey’s failed reelection campaign, they have been spreading the same false notion for years, that criminal justice reforms would endanger communities. This lawsuit against Gascón is nothing more than an attempt to silence voters and maintain the system’s status quo — power over the people.”

“A Los Angeles County DA is now using data and research to make justice reform decisions and dismantle a fundamentally white supremacist law enforcement system. It has been proven that gang enhancements and over-incarceration do not reduce recidivism, crime, or improve community safety — but instead have lasting harmful impacts in Black and brown communities. Over 800 Courage California members in Los Angeles signed a petition, doubling down on their support of DA Gascón and reasserting their voter mandate for courageous change,” said Kao. “Courage California firmly stands with Gascón and the voters of Los Angeles County.”
