Statement by Rick Jacobs, founder and chair of Courage Campaign, on the Senate Armed Services Committee vote approving Chuck Hagel’s nomination for Secretary of Defense:

As Ronald Reagan would say, “Well, there they go again.” The Republicans in the Senate would rather play politics than defend our nation. Let’s be clear, Republicans don’t like Senator Hagel because he thinks not about party, but about country. He had the courage to speak out against the war in Iraq, arguably the biggest foreign policy blunder in American history.

The Republicans hide behind fifteen-year-old comments to a gay ambassador or pretend to be outraged because of his comments about Israel, but the fact is when it comes to the war in Iraq, Chuck Hagel  was right and they were wrong and they can’t stand it. If these red-faced senators want to vote against President Obama’s choice as his Secretary of Defense, go right ahead. But for country’s sake, stand up and vote. Don’t skulk around with secret “holds” and procedural ploys. Just vote.”
