Under the current Democratic Party nominating rules, 712 “super-delegates” — elected officials and well-connected members of the party — are free to support any candidate for the presidential nomination at the party’s national convention. They have the power to overrule the will of voters in a close contest.
The super-delegate system is unrepresentative, contradicts the purported values of the party and its members, and reduces the party’s moral authority.
