No to the Recall, Yes to Progress

no to the recall

Whatever our color, background or zip code, all Californians deserve a government that works for all of us. We need leadership that is focused on an equitable and just recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic that has impacted everyone, especially communities of color and low-income communities. But right now, an effort to recall Governor Gavin Newsom threatens to set us back on our pathway to recovery. That’s why ALL Californians, regardless of political party or beliefs, must unite to stop the unnecessary recall of Governor Gavin Newsom. Our health, safety, and economic security depend on it.

With courage, we can say “No” to a recall and “Yes” to progress!

What you should know about the recall

The majority of Californians support Governor Newsom

Those behind the recall are anti-immigrant, anti-affordable housing, and anti-worker

  • POLITICO reported one of the co-founders and chief organizers of the recall suggested it would be a good idea to “microchip” immigrants. “It works,” he wrote, “just ask Animal Control!”
  • The top donor of the recall effort, Geoff Palmer, is a billionaire who called affordable housing “immoral” and spent millions to fight efforts to house Californians.
  • John Cox – a leader in the recall effort and one of the top Republican candidates already running  – wants to abolish the minimum wage and thinks the state spends too much money on public education.
  • The LA Times and other news organizations have reported how the recall is powered by a coalition that includes anti-vaxxers, QAnon conspiracy theorists, and Trump supporters. National Republicans like Newt Gingrich, Mike Huckabee, Rudy Giuliani and Devin Nunes have all publicly backed it.

California doesn’t need a recall now

  • A recall of Governor Newsom will cost the state over $100 million – money that could be used to help vaccinate our communities and further COVID-19 recovery.
  • Governor Newsom is up for re-election in 2022. Two elections in one year for one seat is too much, especially at a time when we need stable leadership to see our recovery through.
  • A recall of Governor Newsom puts future appointments of Senators and other statewide offices at risk of going to Republicans.

We cannot afford to disrupt progress

Under Governor Newsom’s leadership, California is  on a clear pathway to recovery.

  • California has administered over 20 million vaccinations.
    • California has distributed more vaccines than all but 5 countries and has built the most robust distribution system in the country.
  • Used the state surplus to deliver direct relief, the Golden State Stimulus – $600 cash payments to nearly 6 million Californians.
  • Launched the largest small business grant program in the nation, more than $2.6 billion.
  • Providing millions of dollars in fee relief to hundreds of thousands of businesses that have been impacted by COVID-19.
    • $100 million in emergency financial aid for community college students.
    • $75 million in direct relief to undocumented residents who were denied aid by the federal stimulus program.

A recall would keep California from making real changes our communities need

  • No opportunity to move forward on Medicare for All/Single Payer.
  • The risk of further disinvestment from public education and the diversion of education funds toward charters or voucher programs.
  • Rolling back environmental protections.
  • Reversal of criminal justice reforms.

And there are many other progressive policies that we have a better chance of passing under the Newsom administration.

Defeating the recall is critical to ensuring California residents remain safe amid the pandemic and that our families recover financially. We need to move forward, not backward, for a California that works for all of us.

What’s next:

The California secretary of state has to notify counties by May 9 on if enough signatures have been verified to proceed.

This triggers a month-and-a-half-long period where people could remove their signatures from the recall drive.

NO TO THE RECALL, YES TO PROGRESS!
