Los Angeles — In response to the Supreme Court of the United States overturning Roe v. Wade and ending American’s constitutional right to abortion, California’s largest progressive organization, Courage California, released the following statement:

By overturning Roe v. Wade and gun-safety laws in the last two days, the right-wing majority of the Supreme Court of the United States has undermined the will of the majority of Americans, criminalized choice, and endangered lives. Donald Trump – who had lost the popular vote, was impeached by Congress, and led an armed insurrection – made good on his promise to place extremist justices on the court, and now we are seeing the dire consequences. The decisions led by Justices Alioto, Barrett, Gorsuch, Kavanaugh, Roberts, and Thomas affirm their commitment to a white Christian nationalist political agenda, instead of the equal protection for all Americans under the law.
It’s time for Californians and people across the nation to stand together, fight for the rights of all Americans, and take action to ensure we have leaders with the courage to uphold the will of the people. Recent SCOTUS decisions signal the intentions of this right-wing majority to go further in their attacks on gun safety, marriage equality, contraception, and LGBTQIA+ rights.
Courage California is committed to enshrine abortion protections championed by the California Future of Abortion Council, direct resources to ACCESS Reproductive Justice to support abortion for people in California and from states in which abortion is illegal, lobby for new gun safety measures, and endorse and elect pro-choice, pro-gun safety candidates at all levels of government.
We call on our Senators to immediately end the filibuster, pass bills to protect abortion, and do more to aggressively strengthen gun safety. Every Californian and American must vote their values on November 8 and elect courageous leaders who will counter the upcoming decades of attacks from the right-wing majority of the Supreme Court and MAGA leaders.
Abortion is legal in California, and our strong gun safety laws are still in place. Courage California will fight to ensure that this will continue to be the case in our state and that our state’s model of expanding rights and protections will be the nationwide standard.
