LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA — On Thursday, November 17th, Courage Campaign will host the Sixth Annual Spirit of Courage Awards, the biggest night of the year for California’s largest progressive organization. Progressive leaders will offer their vision for California’s progressive movement under a Trump Presidency.
The event benefits Courage Campaign Institute, a nonprofit educational organization.
This year, the Spirit of Courage Awards will honor State Senator Holly J. Mitchell, whose 30th Senate District stretches from Culver City to South Los Angeles; and Steve Phillips, founder of PowerPAC and Democracy in Color, and New York Times bestselling author of Brown is the New White: How the Demographic Revolution Has Created A New American Majority.

Jane Kim, who serves on the San Francisco Board of Supervisors, will present the Spirit of Courage Award to Steve Phillips. The presentation to Sen. Holly Mitchell will include her constituents and video messages from Congresswoman Karen Bass and John Perez, Former Speaker of the State Assembly.
The emcee for the night will be feminist and Muslim comedian Zahra Noorbakhsh, co-host of the podcast “#GoodMuslimBadMuslim.” Guests will include actors Josh Stamberg, Myndy Crist, Mouzam Makkar, and Stephanie Beatriz. Live music will be provided by Arcoiris, the world’s first LGBTQ mariachi band, based in Los Angeles.
With 1.3 million members, Courage Campaign fights for a more progressive California and country.
The event comes just six days after Courage Campaign launched the Courageous Resistance in the wake of Donald Trump’s election victory.
The Spirit of Courage Awards was established in 2011 to honor progressive champions in California. Past events include the following:
- In 2015 at Los Angeles Union Station, Courage Campaign honored Molly Munger and Steve English, civil rights attorneys and co-founders of the Advancement Project, and Bruce Arena, head coach of the LA Galaxy.
- In 2014 at House of Blues, Courage Campaign honored Tom Morello, Rage Against the Machine musician and activist, and Rev. Frank Schaefer, marriage equality champion.
- In 2013 at Page Museum, La Brea Tar Pits, Courage Campaign honored Jamie Lynton, activist and progressive leader, and Paul Katami and Jeff Zarrillo, Kris Perry and Sandy Stier, plaintiffs in the Prop 8 trial.
- In 2012 at Peterson Automotive Museum, Courage Campaign honored then-Attorney General Kamala Harris, and Brian and Patrick Burke, founders of You Can Play.
- In 2011 at Museum of Natural History, Courage Campaign honored Marcy Carsey, legendary television producer.
