SUNDAY: Courage Campaign to Fly Plane Banner Over 49ers’ Sunday Night Football Game in Support of Colin Kaepernick

Banner Will Fly Over New Era Field Before Sunday Night Football, Reading, “@CourageCampaign: Kap Inspires Courage!”

CALIFORNIA — This Sunday starting at 11:00 AM PT, the California-based Courage Campaign will fly a plane banner over New Era Field just before the Sunday night football game between the 49ers and the Buffalo Bills. The banner will read, “@CourageCampaign: Kap Inspires Courage!” in support of Niners quarterback Colin Kaepernick’s ongoing protest in which he takes a knee during the playing of the national anthem.

Since he began his protest during preseason games, Kaepernick’s protest has spread, inspiring athletes from the NFL to high schools across America. The protest has also won support from high profile figures including Steph Curry, Kareem Abdul Jabbar, military veterans, and President Obama.

“Colin Kaepernick has shown true courage in standing up for black lives in the manner he’s chosen,” said Eddie Kurtz, Executive Director of Courage Campaign. “He’s been powerfully effective in spreading his message, and he’s inspired people from his teammates on the 49ers to high school students around the nation to support his message and join him in protest.”

“When stars like Kaepernick publicly take a stand for black lives, it magnifies the cultural force of a much larger movement. With Kaepernick drawing targeted, racist hate from those who have the audacity to question his patriotism, there is no better time to stand with Kaepernick and send messages of support to him and other teammates, players, and coaches who have stood by him,” added Kurtz.

Previously, Courage Campaign purchased a billboard supportive of Kaepernick’s protest just off the Bay Bridge in Oakland, CA. You can see the billboard’s artwork in support of Kaepernick here: https://s3.amazonaws.com/s3.couragecampaign.org/images/patriotism_billboard_6.jpg

Just Resisting (JR) and Showing Up for Racial Justice (SURJ) will join Courage Campaign’s action with a rally at Gate 5 at 1:00 PM, where activists will be kneeling outside the stadium in solidarity with Kaepernick during the national anthem. They will also call on Coach Rex Ryan to withdraw his endorsement of Donald Trump amidst a multitude of racist remarks coming out of Trump’s presidential campaign.
