The California Legislature is about to vote on a deeply flawed climate bill that won’t do enough to reduce carbon emissions, while also giving corporate polluters carte blanche to keep poisoning California’s cities — with poor folks and communities of color paying the biggest toll.
Assembly Bill 398 — a bill to extend CA’s cap and trade system from 2020 to 2030 — is stuffed with giveaways to Big Oil and other corporate polluters in order to court Republican support. But sources inside the Capitol report that the bill is vulnerable. We can kill this bill if enough Democrats vote no despite the intense political pressure to support it.
