Courage Campaign Urges Gov. Brown to Follow Obama’s Lead and Focus on Inequality Over Debt

Statement by Dr. Paul Song, executive chairman of the California-based CourageCampaign.org, applauding President Obama’s focus on economic inequality in the State of the Union address and on the need for Governor Brown to do the same:

“In his State of the Union address before Congress last night, President Obama rightly focused on the plight of working families and the need to address a growing crisis of income inequality, as our nation’s top priority. President Obama’s attention to the economic challenges of working class Americans stands in stark contrast to Gov. Jerry Brown, who has refused to restore cuts to vital services decimated by the Great Recession and instead chooses to obsess over the State’s debt. California’s modest, recent increase in the minimum wage is not nearly enough.

California has the 5th highest unemployment rate in the nation. Now is not the time to prioritize debt payments over investments that will grow the economy and provide opportunity for working class Californians. The only way to truly tackle California’s long term debt obligations is by creating a thriving economy. Governor Brown should follow the lead of President Obama and give California a budget that prioritizes investment in our communities, families, and kids to grow the economy over strict debt reduction that will only perpetuate issues of income inequality.”
